Special Issue Introduction

Fibrotic diseases are conditions arising due to complications of excessive scarring of fibrous tissue. Abdominal adhesions and dermal fibrosis are two such conditions governed by underlying pathogenic fibrotic mechanisms. Pathogenic fibrosis is driven by fibroblasts - a critical component of the structural tissue of the body. Untreated fibrosis leads to excessive collagen deposition during wound healing and fibrotic scarring called abdominal adhesions. While fibrotic conditions like dermal fibrosis and abdominal scarring severely impact patient quality of life, current clinical treatments are ineffective or entirely nonexistent. This special issue is dedicated to studying the underlying mechanistic processes that drive fibrosis and identify novel targets to resolve fibrosis in pathologic conditions like abdominal scarring and dermal fibrosis. We hope to answer pertinent questions in the field of fibrotic diseases and invite research that would ultimately aid in desgning effective anti-fibrotics in clinic.
