Special Issue Introduction
Management of Traumatic Digit Amputations is a topic of great interest to the microsurgeons that manage upper extremity trauma. Without the advent of microsurgery in the late 1960s, all amputated digits were simply thrown away. We will review historical perspectives of replantation surgery and advances that have made this aspect of microsurgery a fulcrum of reconstructive hand surgery. Topics such as algorithms for the management of traumatic digit amputation, streamlining the replantation operation, use of nerve grafts and conduits, use of venous flaps, outcome of single digit replantations, secondary operations after replantation surgery, and concepts/planning for the highest functional results of the mutilated hand will be covered in detail by international experts in replantation surgery.
